• Blogger, Alles Ist Gut/ Mrs. Spider and I seem to be on the same wave length today. While in the garden last night I met this lovely lady. She is a Black and Yellow Garden spider (Argiope aurantia)- apparently quite common!

I recently discovered Violet Gallery on WordPress; a treasure trove of gorgeous sketches, water colors, and a cat named Malus. One of the posts referenced “Kitchen Witches”. I happen to have one and wanted to share her. She is 25 years old and came to live with me in Rhode Island. My cooking is still sketchy, but the memories she preserves are precious.

  • The Atlantic was my first; oysters at the same time, somewhere near Wellfleet on Cape Cod. These pictures were taken at the Gulf of Mexico, near Indian Rocks Beach, FL. I love salt water, the ocean, and all the abundant life; every assault by man-made disaster is devastating.

  • I occasionally write about a group of young people who work for a cafe I frequent, Fresh Grounds. They all have amazing stories of resilience and recovery. They also don’t mind being photo subjects- in fact, the word is out- I am now, ‘the woman who takes pictures’. I often hear, “Will you take my photo?”

I just added Stephen and Jami to the portfolio:

  • When I logged on this morning, a neat little message popped up informing me that it was a year ago today that I launched my blog, West Seventh Freelance. Many thanks to all of you who have made the year spectacular!

  • “You are receiving an award –- either one that already exists, or a new one created just for you. What would the award be, why are you being honored, and what would you say in your acceptance speech?”

Acceptance Speech for “MOST AWED BY YOUR PRESENCE IN MY LIFE” Award

Dear 195 WordPress Writers, Photographers, Adventurers, Cat Aficionados, Kayakers, World Citizens, Air Stream Travelers, Poets, Movie Buffs, Mannequins who are really people, Minnesotans, and you know who you are..,

All of you, who drop by and sign on, thrill me with the beauty and poignancy of your photography and words. You lead me to new places and new people through your posts, and portals to places like EyeEm and Flickr.

I do my best to keep up with your activities; I worry when I don’t see you around (or blame those poor folks at WordPress for dropping you out of my feed..)

Each person who clicks on ‘follow this blog’ led to this moment. I am honored, and humbled. I would like to thank my cats, Dylan and Bagheera, for their unflagging support, and to all the cats in the blogosphere who kept us going when we first started out.

  • Those of us who live near the Ford Ranger plant in St. Paul, MN have watched the daily demolition of an industrial icon. In 2006 Ford officials announced plans to close the factory, though it operated for three years past the 2008 closure date initially announced. The plant’s final truck was completed on December 16, 2011.

I drove over today with the intention of taking a few shots of what is quite an apocalyptic scene. Security on site told me “no photos allowed”, despite the fact that there is no posting to that effect.

    “Why?”, I asked.

    “You cannot take any photos.”

“Well who can I talk to to obtain permission?”

“I don’t know…you can take pictures from the sidewalk,” was the final answer.

    ‘Huh?!’ OK!!

  • Today I drove to Mankato, MN, south and west of the Twin Cities. I was meeting up with a friend’s daughter and wanted to take in a few “landmarks” as well. They are, in no particular order: Minnesota’s Largest Candy Store in Jordan, MN (a whole table of REAL licorice); St. Peter, MN- home to Gustavus Adolphus College and the location of the annual, international Nobel Conference, and a big red barn that happened to catch my eye…

While in St. Peter, I bought fresh corn from Mallory, who was reading a best seller to pass the time. She also had hula hoops and was happy to demonstrate.

    Another satisfying meander…

  • We took a little jaunt along the Mississippi, following Route 61 past Red Wing and on to Wabasha, MN. In between, we stopped at Reads Landing, a mere sign post and sharp turn off the two lane highway. We had lunch at Reads Landing Brewing Company and watched eagles high above the river. A fisherman posed with his amazing catch of the day and the Queen Anne’s Lace was in full summer glory.

  • My neighbor, and friend, Nikki, volunteered to help me set up some practice shots. Lots of giggling- no drinking- except the ginger ale :).
